Vitamin C Treatment Cuts Tumor Growth in Mice
“NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 04 – Parenteral treatment with vitamin C can reduce the growth of aggressive tumor xenografts in mice, according to a report in the August 4th Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The article below is rather astonishing but long, long overdue. In fact, what this study, reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says is that when mice are given an aggressive form of cancer (glioblastoma, a virulent brain tumor) and then given a single [presumed high] dose of Vitamin C. The result is that the tumor growth was slowed.
When daily doses were given to mice who had brain, ovarian and pancreatic cancers implanted in their abdomens, the results were dramatic although “cure” did not result.”
Well, of course it did not. Used by a nutritional physician, Vitamin C is not given alone. It is part of a total regimen including diet, supplements, exercise, detoxification, etc.
So their conclusion, although naive, is quite hopeful because the barrier between themselves and common sense about nutritional therapies put up for so long by mainstream medicine might, just might, be breaking down as the conventional cancer therapies fail and fail and fail.
For years, as you know, Vitamin C treatment for cancer was demonized. There were periodic reports, of course, like this, but they tended to disappear without a trace. Perhaps this one will be the one that opens the gates for wide acceptance of the wisdom that the natural medicine community, through all of its practitioners, has accummulated for so long.
You see, in my office, and the office of every other nutritional physician, naturopath, homeopath, etc., results that never, never occur in the treatment of chronic, degenerative diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, arthritis, allergies, autism, etc., etc. We treat causes, not down-stream events like the diseases after the nutritional and toxic problems have taken their toll. That’s why we already know about treatments like Vitamin C (+ other aspects of the protocol) for our cancer patients! After all, we have had wonderful teachers, for example, Linus Pauling!

Although vitamin C is typically thought of as an antioxidant, Dr. Mark Levine and colleagues show in the new study that it can also act as a prooxidant. The results also indicate that at pharmacologic levels, the essential nutrient elicits hydrogen peroxide-dependent cytotoxicity only toward cancer cells, leaving normal cells unscathed.
Testing in mice with glioblastoma xenografts showed that a single parenteral dose of vitamin C leads to free radical formation in tumor interstitial fluids, but not in the blood, Dr. Levine, from National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and co-authors found.
Daily treatment with vitamin C significantly slowed the growth of glioblastoma, ovarian cancer, and pancreatic cancer in mice.
To gauge the therapeutic potential of vitamin C, the researchers administered the nutrient intravenously to humans and found that concentrations corresponding to the efficacious levels in mice were, in fact, achievable.
Despite these encouraging results, the authors note that “use of pharmacologic ascorbate as a single agent was not curative.” Still, they believe that it could be used in combination with other therapies to increase the efficacy against prognostically poor malignancies, such as those examined in the study.

Greenpeace noted today that the reexamination of “safety” data presented by Monsanto to the European Commission for review was so seriously flawed that it should be removed from the list of permitted foods.
The corn (or “Maize” as it is often called) is a genetically engineered variety called MON863 which was approved in the European Commission for human use despite 2003 when it was shown to be associated with blood and organ changes and damage. Despite fierce opposition, the failed food has been approved for farming and human consumption in the EU, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, the Phillipines, and USA.
A review of the data presented by Monsanto, the owner of the patent on this organism, showed that the methodology and rigor of the data were woefully lacking according to an article published in “Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology” earlier this week.
The data for the study was only obtained after a successful court case in France in which Greenpeace and other concerned citizens and organizations sued to gain access to the data presented to the European Commission and resulting in its subsequent approval.

“Laboratory rats, fed with a genetically engineered (GE) maize produced by Monsanto, have shown signs of toxicity in kidney and liver, according to a new study.(1) This is the first time that a GE product which has been cleared for use as food for humans and animals has shown signs of toxic effects on internal organs.
The study, published today in the journal “Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicologyâ€, analyzed results of safety tests submitted by Monsanto to the European Commission when the company was seeking authorization to market its GE Maize variety MON863 in the EU. (2)
The data shows that MON863 has significant health risks associated with it; nonetheless, the European Commission granted licences to market the maize for consumption by both humans and animals. (3)
The incriminating evidence was obtained by Greenpeace following a court case (4), and passed on for evaluation by a team of experts headed by Professor Gilles Eric Séralini, a governmental expert in genetic engineering technology from the University of Caen. (5)
In a joint press conference with Greenpeace at Berlin, Professor Séralini said, “Monsanto’s analyses do not stand up to rigorous scrutiny – to begin with, their statistical protocols are highly questionable. Worse, the company failed to run a sufficient analysis of the differences in animal weight. Crucial data from urine tests were concealed in the company’s own publications.â€
Greenpeace is demanding the complete and immediate withdrawal of Monsanto’s MON 863 maize from the global market and is calling upon governments to undertake an urgent reassessment of all other authorised GE products and a strict review of current testing methods.
“This is the final nail in the coffin for the credibility of the current authorisation system for GE products. Once it’s known that a system designed to protect human and animal health has approved a high-risk product despite clear evidence of its dangers, we need to start ‘strip-searching’ all GE products on the market, and immediately abort this flawed approval procedure,†said Christophe Then, Genetic Engineer campaigner, Greenpeace International.
The data in question has been the subject of fierce debate since 2003, when significant changes were identified in the blood of tested animals fed on MON863. MON863 was approved by the European Commission, in spite of opposition by a majority of EU member states, who raised concerns over the safety of the maize. Professor Séralini’s analysis now scientifically confirms these concerns. As the study states, “with the present data, it cannot be concluded that GM corn MON863 is a safe product.†And yet, MON863 has been authorised for markets in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, the Phillipines, and USA, besides the EU.
“This is an international emergency alert, requiring a global response,†concluded Then, “Only a complete withdrawal from all markets will curtail the possible damage”.â€

We do not know if (under a declared emergency) you will be permitted to self-shield and avoid mandatory vaccination or treatment; we offer this information with that caveat.
Some of this information was provided to us from a retired NBC government. employee (NBC = Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical).
Since retirement, he has gone on to teach preparations to people on warfare and pandemics. He is also a CERT trainer and travels abroad to teach other countries what to do in earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Expert Opinion Memo: Self-Shielding (Self-Quarantine)
I have been asked repeatedly about how to self-shield or quarantine properly and so this private memorandum is being written to respond to that question.
The first thing we need to consider is why we are quarantining. Remember quarantine is due to a biological event and not a chemical or nuclear incident. For these last two you should be sheltering in place. A proper quarantine will protect you from what ever it is you are trying to protect against, henceforth there will be discussing different stages of self-shielding.
1. The first and most basic stage is to go home lock the doors and stay there. DO NOT try to seal up your home with duct tape and plastic as you will not have enough oxygen to breathe within a very short time. The sealing method is used for chemical events where you need to be indoors for a very short period of time. Most self-shielding quarantines will last days if not weeks and months. At this stage you can actually go out in to your front yard or back yard and breathe the air just fine just as long as you do not breathe someone else’s air that might be infected with an airborne communicable disease or virus. This could include certain animals and insects, all depending on the biological involved.
All infected people should remain a good distance (minimum 20 feet) away from you and anyone else sheltering with you. Anyone (again including certain animals and some insects) that has been in a possibly infected area should be kept separate (quarantined separate) from you until they have sought proper medical attention (if it is available) and been cleared or they have run the course of waiting the required length of time to be sure that symptoms will or will not show up.
Remember in most biologicals symptoms do not show up for several days.
[Note from NSF: we have been examining the historical record for latency and infectious periods (for example, for the 1918 pandemic and for the unweaponized Pandemic Flu). The latency period could be up to 2 weeks. Our current best estimate is that people will start to notice symptoms as soon as a week after disbursal of the pathogen; the disease will, if especially virulent, cause death within 72 hours of first symptoms. For example, if the pathogen were released, say, on August 23rd, people would start to notice symptoms by the end of the Labor Day Holiday (Labor Day is usually about September 1st). By the time most students are back in school, say, September 5th, the media would begin to notice and the public authorities would be empowered to act, we suspect, within 72 hours of mass media notice (we believe the alternative media might “get wind” of the impending pandemic a day or a half day earlier). That brings us to September 8th. We can expect national “lock down” and Martial Law within a day or two, as people panic to obtain food and protection. End of Internet communications; possibly of telephone as well.]
For mothers and other care givers wishing to attend infected persons, especially children, during this time, a full biological protection mask, gown, and gloves should be used and then disposed of properly. This really should be avoided at all costs but trying to tell a mother she cannot care for her children is sometimes near to impossible. Exposure time should be set at a bare minimum. The proper shielding garments to be worn would be a disposable non-breathable (Tyvek) suit (available at most paints stores), a tight fitting (with two straps) N-95 or N-100 dust mask, and latex or rubber gloves. All of this needs to be disposable. A better face mask with biological filters is suggested.
It is important to remain quarantined for the suggest length of time that the certain biological requires. This will vary from biological to biological. This means no going to the store or to work or church or school or . . . STAY HOME.
2. The second stage is for more serious conditions where being around certain biologicals, even on the other side of a locked door, posses a more serious problem. Usually at this stage a gas mask with a biological filter is needed instead of a simple N-95 dust mask. Be wary of official warnings as when to move to this level.
3. The third stage is the most serious and nothing other than a level one suit is necessary. Again be wary of official warning as when to move to this level although the common citizen should never be involved with such procedures that would require this level.
What more can I say about this other than . . . STAY HOME. If you prepare now you can do this. It really is not that hard.
Essential Preparedness Steps for Self Shielding: Have a Family Call-out Plan!
1. When the “pandemic emergency” starts, call every family member; get everyone home ASAP.
2. If still on road and/or in public, pull out bio-filter gas mask from kit in auto.
3. Keep radio tuned to local stations you trust for local updates.
4. Upon arriving home, start quarantine by bringing everyone inside, including pets.
5. Put a ‘Quarantined – Self-Shielding’ sign on front door.
6. Start bio-in-house air filter.
7. Set up prepared decontamination station in garage – drapes, shower, gloves, masks, & gowns
8. Set up isolation rooms for possible sick family members and guests.

10. (a) Check all electrical (solar, 12 volt, and battery) systems in case of loss of power. Provide backup, alternative power sources (e.g., batteries, hand cranked generators and radio, etc.)
(b) Check water supplies, have everyone shower daily until loss of water pressure. Stock-pile enough water, food for cooking, drinking, hygiene.
(c) Check on possibility of working from home.
11. Request in advance that school homework assignments be sent over the Internet.
12. Check with contacts you trust for updates on problem.
13. Call your neighbors via phone or internet for distribution of information sheets to neighbors upon confirmation of problem.
14. Prepare to use alternative heating/cooking/lighting/sanitation measures. Think through amounts and types of foods, snacks, etc., and stock-pile at least one month’s supply NOW!

Are feds stockpiling survival food?
‘These circumstances certainly raise red flags’

A Wall Street Journal columnist has advised people to “start stockpiling food” and an ABC News Report says “there are worrying signs appearing in the United States where some … locals are beginning to hoard supplies.” Now there’s concern that the U.S. government may be competing with consumers for stocks of storable food.
“We’re told that the feds bought the entire container of canned butter when it hit the California docks. (Something’s up!),” said officials at Best Prices Storable Foods in an advisory to customers.
Spokesman Bruce Hopkins told WND he also has had trouble obtaining No. 10 cans of various products from one of the world’s larger suppliers of food stores, Oregon Freeze Dry.

He said a company official told him on the telephone when he discussed the status of his order that it was because the government had purchased massive quantities of products, leaving none for other customers.
That, however, was denied by Oregon Freeze Dry. In a website statement, the company confirmed it cannot assure supplying some items to customers.
“We regret to inform you Oregon Freeze Dry cannot satisfy all Mountain House #10 can orders and we have removed #10 cans from our website temporarily,” the company tells frustrated customers. “The reason for this is sales of #10 cans have continued to increase. OFD is allocating as much production capacity as possible to this market segment, but we must maintain capacity for our other market segments as well.”
The company statement continues, “We want to clarify inaccurate information we’ve seen on the Internet. This situation is not due to sales to the government domestically or in Iraq. We do sell products to this market, but we also sell other market segments … The reason for this decision is solely due to an unprecedented sales spike in #10 cans sales.
“We expect this situation to be necessary for several months although this isn’t a guarantee. We will update this information as soon as we know more. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience. We sincerely hope you will continue to be Mountain House customers in the future,” the company statement said.
But Hopkins wasn’t backing away from his concerns.
“The government just came in and said they’re buying it. They did pay for it,” he told WND about the summertime shipment of long-term storage butter. “They took it and no one else could have it.
“We don’t know why. The feds then went to freeze dried companies, and bought most of their canned stock,” he said.
A spokeswoman for Oregon Freeze Dry, sales manager Melanie Cornutt, told WND that the increasing demand for food that can be stored has been on the rise since Hurricane Katrina devastated large sections of the Gulf Coast, cutting off ordinary supply routes.
“We are currently out of stock on our cans. We are not selling any of our cans,” she confirmed.
She then raised the issue of government purchases herself.
“We do sell to the government [but] it is not the reason [for company sales limits],” she said.
Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency told WND whatever government agency is buying in a surge it isn’t them. They reported a stockpile of about six million meals which has not changed significantly in an extended period.
But Hopkins said it was his opinion the government is purchasing huge quantities of food for stockpiles, and Americans will have to surmise why.
“We don’t have shelters that [are being] stocked with food. We’re not doing this for the public. My only conclusion is that they’re stocking up for themselves,” he said of government officials.
Blogger Holly Deyo issued an alert this week announcing, “Unprecedented demand cleans out major storable food supplier through 2009.”
“It came to our attention today, that the world’s largest producer of storable foods, Mountain House, is currently out of stock of ALL #10 cans of freeze dried foods, not just the Turkey Tetrazzini. They will NOT have product now through 2009,” she said.
“This information was learned by a Mountain House dealer who shared it with me this morning. In personally talking with the company immediately after, Mountain House verified the information is true. Customer service stated, ‘I’m surprised they don’t have this posted on the website yet.’ She said they have such a backlog of orders, Mountain House will not be taking any #10 can food requests through the remainder of this year and all of the next.
“Mountain House claims this situation is due to a backlog of orders, which may very well be true, but who is purchasing all of their food? This is a massive global corporation.
“One idea: the military. Tensions are ramping up with Iran and news segments debate whether or not we will implement a preemptive strike in conjunction with Israel,” she wrote.
Hopkins raised some of the same concerns, suggesting a military conflict could cause oil supplies to plummet, triggering a huge increase in the cost of food – when it would be available – because of the transportation issues.
The ABC report from just a few weeks ago quoted Jim Rawles, a former U.S. intelligence officer who runs a survival blog, saying food shortages soon could become a matter of survival in the U.S.
“I think that families should be prepared for times of crisis, whether it’s a man-made disaster or a natural disaster, and I think it’s wise and prudent to stock up on food,” he told ABC.
“If you get into a situation where fuel supplies are disrupted or even if the power grid were to go down for short periods of time, people can work around that,” he said. “But you can’t work around a lack of food – people starve, people panic and you end up with chaos in the streets.”
At his California ranch, the location of which is kept secret, he said, “We have more than a three-year supply of food here.”
In the Wall Street Journal, columnist Brett Arends warned, “Maybe it’s time for Americans to start stockpiling food.
“No, this is not a drill,” he wrote.
His concern was about various food shortages around the globe, and the fact that in a global market, prices in the U.S. reflect difficulties in other parts of the world quickly.
Professor Lawrence F. Roberge, a biologist who has worked with a number of universities and has taught online courses, told WND he’s been following the growing concern over food supplies.
He also confirmed to WND reports of the government purchasing vast quantities of long-term storable foods.
He said that naturally would be kept secret to avoid panicking the public, such as when word leaks out to customers that a bank may be insolvent, and depositors frantically try to retrieve their cash.
“[These] circumstances certainly raise red flags,” he said.
